The eager countdown for the arrival of Maa (Goddess) Durga to her maiden home is celebrated on this day. The duration of the countdown lasts for a week, but in the year 2020 specifically, the festival arrived a month later. This is because the Lunar Month falls immediately on the day succeeding Mahalaya. This month is considered inauspicious and hence does not involve celebrations.
Every year, the Bengalis wake up at 4 am specifically to listen to a chant. This chant has been performed by a specific man past 50-60 years. Although now he is no more, his recorded voice carries on his legacy. This sense of nostalgia has been carried forward through the years and has now become a part of a continued tradition. It is said that when one listens to the chant, their entire day, year and life is blessed. Hence, one eagerly tunes into the radio station at 4 am on Mahalay.

Furthermore, on this day, the idol makers draw the eyes of Durga Maa. This ritual is termed 'Chokkhu Daan'. It signifies the awakening of Maa Durga. This marks the beginning of her journey to her father's place.

It is also believed on this day, the ancestors come down to earth. It is ritualistic for their descendants serve them water.
This year (2020), however, another auspicious occasion falls on the same day - Vishwakarma Pooja - which falls on the 17th of September every year. Here, Pooja for the factories, machinery and shops are conducted to seek blessings from Lord Vishwakarma, the architect of the world.
